What is a Mobility Company?
Regardless of what automobile manufacturer you have your eggs in, you will find a program devoted to alternate fuel and ride sharing. In fact, in an effort to show the world that they are more than just combustion engine factories, every car manufacturer on the planet is now saying that they are “mobility companies”. We recognize a buzz word when we see one, but what exactly is a mobility company? Here is a hint: it has nothing to do with the new Mercedes-Benz Metris!
“The ability to move or be moved freely and easily”
For an automotive company, this can be interpreted a few different ways. This vagueness is probably what makes the term so popular in the first place. From what we can tell, it basically means that they are ready to adapt to a changing market. The fact that it has an automotive feel to it is just a bonus.
Mercedes-Benz is not free from stipulation on this one. It is the oldest manufacturer on the planet and like all the other companies, it is pretending it just discovered mobility. We don’t blame the company, though, because it is just doing what it has to make everyone think they are happy.
Concept cars like the F015 Luxury in Motion and the Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile kind of show us what Mercedes-Benz intends to portray with its mobility ploy. The vehicles are smart. So smart that they don’t need drivers. This is an adaptation of the original automobile. Ride sharing is also something Mercedes-Benz is getting into with the purchase of Car2Go and its cooperation with Uber. What do you think? Does mobility mean anything or has marketing blinded us yet again? Leave your strong opinion in the comment section below!
