What is Mercedes-Benz adVANce?
Mercedes-Benz adVANce is a commercial van initiative to better connect, innovate, and increase mobility in the transport industry. Mercedes-Benz recognized an opportunity to expand in a market that is lacking competition and begging for growth.
The commercial van industry has remained unchanged for the last 50 years. Of course, we have many small innovations and features that we didn’t have half a century ago, but for the most part, a commercial van is a commercial van. Mercedes-Benz is aiming to change this with the adVANce initiative and the Mercedes-Benz Vision Van. The adVANce program, as Mercedes-Benz puts it, is a three-point plan. These points are digitalization, delivery efficiency, and mobility.
There are certainly exceptions to this, but for the most part, the commercial van industry is living in the past. Most delivery companies do currently have a means of keeping track of their cargo digitally, but it is in the form of a hand-held device. This requires the driver to manage inventory. With the Vision Van, drivers can let the van do all the work, scanning, organizing, and reporting its status back to the mother ship.
There are many areas in the commercial transport world that could be improved with standardization and technological advancements. For example, the need to reorganize cargo every so often takes up time. Loading cargo, navigating hard-to-find deliveries, downtime at distribution centers – it all takes time. Mercedes-Benz aims to reduce the amount of time spent not delivering packages with autonomy.
There are times when a delivery physically can’t get to a delivery location. Mercedes-Benz wants to minimize this with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz Vision Van. Not only is it small and compact, but it also has two delivery drones waiting on top of the van, ready to boldly go where no van has ever gone before.
